HydroBarrel Ice Bath – Frequently Asked Questions
Here you’ll find answers to the most common questions about the HydroBarrel ice bath range.
Can I use a Water Butt instead of a HydroBarrel?
No - and doing so would void the warranty.
The HydroBarrel is specifically engineered for cold plunge use. It contains 20–30% more material than a standard water butt, giving it significantly greater strength and weight-bearing durability.
The HydroBarrel is designed specifically for full-body immersion and repeated cold exposure use. Because of this construction, we confidently extend the warranty from 3 years to 5 years total coverage.
A standard water butt is not designed for full-body immersion or repeated cold exposure use.
Can I use a chiller with my HydroBarrel?
Yes — absolutely.
The HydroBarrel is fully compatible with popular ice bath chillers including:
- MyoMaster MyoChill
- Lumi Mini & Lumi Cube
- And other chiller systems with an internal hose size up to 25mm
Improved Circulation (From 01/08/2025)
All new HydroBarrels now include:
- Two outlets
- A new top-mounted inlet
This top inlet improves water circulation and reduces chill time.
If your barrel does not yet have the upper inlet, it can easily be added (see below).
You can also view examples in our HydroBarrel Chiller Connection Guide.
Does the HydroBarrel have a seat inside?
No — the HydroBarrel does not include a built-in seat.
If you prefer to sit, we recommend using a step stool or similar seating option.
How to Check the Right Height
Sit on the floor and measure from the ground to the top of your shoulders.
For effective cold therapy, your shoulders should sit below the rim of the barrel.
Distance from step-stool seat to rim:
- HydroBarrel 240: 57cm
- HydroBarrel 350: 65cm
- HydroBarrel 480: 91cm
What is the blanking plug above the tap for?
The blanking plug covers a brass thread connection point.
From June 1st, 2025, all HydroBarrels come pre-drilled and chiller-ready.
If your barrel was purchased before this date:
- Remove the plug
- You’ll find a moulded indent behind it
- This indent guides your drill bit
We recommend using a drill bit between 10mm–16mm.
How should I clean my HydroBarrel?
Cleaning is simple:
- Wash with warm soapy water
- Rinse thoroughly with a hose
- Allow to dry
- Wipe down with a household antibacterial cleaner
Each HydroBarrel is pre-cleaned with antibacterial solution before shipping.
Will the lid stay on in windy weather?
Yes.
HydroBarrel lids:
- Weigh between 2kg–3kg (depending on size)
- Feature a moulded channel underneath
- Fit snugly over the rim
This prevents wind lift and helps keep debris out.
Can I use chlorine in the HydroBarrel?
Yes.
The HydroBarrel is made from low-density linear polyethylene (LLPE) — a material with excellent resistance to chlorine and water treatment chemicals.
Can I use Epsom salts in my ice bath?
Yes — Epsom salts can safely be added.
Many users incorporate Epsom salts into their cold plunge routine as part of muscle recovery practices.
However, avoid chloride-based salts such as:
- Table salt
- Road salt
These are not suitable for use in the HydroBarrel.
What is the lifespan of the HydroBarrel?
We provide a 5-year warranty, but the barrel itself can last up to 25 years with proper care.
It is manufactured from highly durable LLPE that is resistant to:
- UV exposure
- Frost
- Outdoor weather conditions
- Repeated water use
This makes it a long-term outdoor cold plunge solution - not a short-term inflatable alternative.
How much does the HydroBarrel weigh?
Due to manufacturing variation, final weight may vary by approximately -5%.
Maximum listed weights:
- HydroBarrel 240: 14.8kg
- HydroBarrel 350: 19kg
- HydroBarrel 480: 24kg
What temperature should an ice bath be?
The ideal ice bath temperature is typically below 15°C (60°F). At this point, cold water immersion begins to provide the mental and physical benefits commonly associated with ice baths, including improved recovery and circulation.
Many experienced cold plunge users prefer slightly colder temperatures, often between 4–10°C (40–50°F), once they become more accustomed to cold exposure.
For beginners, it is recommended to start around 15°C or slightly warmer and gradually reduce the temperature or increase immersion time as your tolerance to cold water improves.
